From April to October 2011, A/S Øresund will be carrying out a safety upgrading of the Øresund motorway between Ørestad and the Tårnby tunnel. The work, which will extend this busy part of the motorway from two to three lanes, is being undertaken in order to address the growth in traffic and to alleviate congestion problems during peak morning and evening periods.
Aimed at enhancing the safety of motorists, the expansion is being implemented now because it will cause less disruption to traffic than if carried out at a later stage with increased traffic.
The upgrading should also be seen within the context of the planned ”quiet surfacing” work scheduled for 2012, which will reduce noise from vehicles.
The expansion
The west-facing ramps at Englandsvej will be extended to Ørestad to allow for a safer flow of traffic during peak periods. Moreover, the extension will alleviate congestion problems for eastbound traffic towards Englandsvej and merging problems for westbound traffic and ramp traffic from Englandsvej.
The extension will take place within the existing road incline and therefore will not affect the motorway's neighbours or require acquisition of adjacent land.
In 2012, the entire Øresund motorway will receive a new ”quiet surface” as the lifetime and noise reduction properties of the existing road surface are becoming outworn, creating a risk of potholes.
The extension of the ramps will be carried out prior to the replacement of the road surface in 2012, which will avoid any digging into the new surface. The two projects cannot be carried out simultaneously for timing reasons.
