Bridge piers and abutments

A total of 19 bridge piers combine the pillars of the bridge. There are 12 pillars between Zealand and the east anchor blocks and seven between Sprogø and the west anchor blocks. One anchor block weighs approx. 6,000 tons.

The bridge piers are hollow in the upper section, and there is access from the pier top to the interior of the pier through a hatch. The bridge piers nearest each anchor block and the anchor blocks themselves are protected against collisions by artificial reefs. The reefs ensure that any off-course vessels run aground before they hit the piers.

Ramps and abutments

To ensure a sufficiently low gradient on the road deck, and an appropriate height under the bridge on land, ramps made from earth have been constructed at both Sprogø and Zealand into which the bridge abutment is founded.

The abutments have been carefully adapted to the landscape in order to preserve the bridge’s light and airy appearance. The abutments provide access to the interior of the bridge’s girders. The abutment’s broad doors and hoists allow for the handling of large and heavy equipment inside the bridge, e.g. in connection with the replacement of transformers.
