To provide space for the excavated material from the tunnel boring, land was reclaimed north of the original Sprogø. Before construction of the fixed link commenced, Sprogø covered approximately 40 hectares. By the time of the completion of the construction works, this area had been quadrupled.
The original Sprogø, commonly known as Old Sprogø, is separated from New Sprogø by a fence to protect wildlife on the old island. An approx.17 km gravel road has been laid at New Sprogø for the operation and maintenance of the coast protection, abutments, technical installations etc. 90 per cent of Sprogø’s approx. 9 km long shoreline is revetment. In co-operation with the authorities, A/S Storebælt has drawn up a plan for conserving the Natural areas on the protected Old Sprogø.
